What am I to do?
Gastric bypass and pregnancy is a hotly debated subject. Women who suffer from morbid obesity are often times infertile. If these women do infact become pregnant they are going to be at a very high risk because of the hypertension, diabetes and other nasty risk factors.
Bariatric surgery will reduce the woman's weight and the incidence of obesity related deaths. If a patient had an operation that restricts food intake there are some basic precautions that should be taken when they become pregnant. Many people believe that if you are to lose the weight and become into the normal human range of weight that your baby has a significantly higher chance of being born healthy. A person that is severely obese the risk of the pregnancy is going to be very high, it is just a mathematical certainty that has been proven time and time again.
A woman who is fit and healthy will have a much better chance at having a stress free and successful pregnancy. There are; however, a few risks that are associated with gastric bypass and pregnancy. The main risk is nutritional deficiencies that in extreme cases can require intravenous feeding. This is not a common occurrence, but if you are predisposed to being deficient, then odds are your baby will be too. Also keep in mind that you are going to be taking in a very small amount of calories, and those calories are going to have to be shared with your baby. Make sure that you eat a very healthy and approved diet from your doctor. What you feed yourself you are also feeding your baby. Make the smart choice.
